Constituency profile

While this seat is slightly more marginal than its neighbour Luton South, it does seem to be a safe Labour seat for the time being.

The Conservatives did have almost the same percentage majority as Labour won by in 1997, although the increase in Labour's majority against the national trend in 2001 seemed to suggest that the Conservatives, who are in need of a 12.8 per cent swing to gain the seat, would find more profitable ground for recovery elsewhere.
