EU campaigners highlight local role
The new EU constitution will boost local government, according to the pro-European coalition Britain in Europe.
Anthony Nelson, chairman of the cross-party group, said town halls formed an important link between grassroots politics and European policies.
He was highlighting the role played by the EU's Committee of the Regions, which represents the interests of local and regional tiers of government at the European level.
"Local and regional authorities already provide an important link between European initiatives and grassroots democracy," said Nelson.
He added that the new constitution would give the committee "an added responsibility for monitoring the application of the principle of subsidiarity".
Referendum push
Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat member of the London assembly Graham Tope said councillors would have an important role to play in the campaign for a yes vote in next year's referendum.
"Working together, local authorities and the European Union have delivered improvements to people's lives, especially in the fields of economic development and environmental protection," he added.
Nelson admitted that pro-EU campaigners had a difficult task to secure public approval of the EU constitution.
"There is no denying we start this long campaign as underdogs," he said.
"Our opponents are well-funded and enjoy the vocal support of large sections of the British press. But I am confident that we can come from behind to win."
