Constituency profile

Labour cannot have expected to win this seat in 1997; indeed, it was effectively gifted the seat by tactical Liberal Democrat voting and a four-way split in the Conservative vote.

Despite that, however, it managed to retain the seat in 2001, mainly due, it appears, to the local popularity of the MP.

This is the sort of seat that the Conservative party are desperate to regain and, indeed, must do so if they have any hopes of again challenging for power.

It remains to be seen if they can unseat Ivor Caplin next time, or if their recovery will have to wait until the economy starts to slip.
