This is a very safe Labour seat.

While Plaid Cymru had a major bounce in the Valleys in 1999, it is unlikely that they will be in a better position to challenge Dr Howells than they were at the time of his by-election success.

Having failed to defeat Jane Davidson at the inaugural contest to the National Assembly for Wales, it will be a big job for Plaid to avoid being reduced to the level of also-rans in the coterminous Assembly elections too.
