This seat has stayed with the Conservative Party despite the party’s 1997 nadir and amid some major and unfavourable boundary changes.

The improvements in their share of the vote in 2001 suggest that the worst is definitely over for the Tories here.

Given Labour’s rapidly deteriorating relationship with the rural classes, who tend to vote Conservative anyway, Mr O’Brien’s hand should be considerably strengthened at the next general election.
