Gordon Brown will escape the Treasury before his reputation is tarnished by major problems brewing in the government's finances, Vincent Cable has predicted.

The Liberal Democrat economic spokesman said he was now convinced that the man he currently shadows would be moving to the Foreign Office if Labour won a third term.
