Constituency profile

Chelmsford is an affluent town with a successful local economy and good educational provision.

As long as this remains true, as long as unemployment figures do not start to soar rather than creep upwards and as long as the opposition remains fairly evenly divided between the Liberal Democratic party and Labour, Burns will continue to win comfortably.

This, combined with its electoral history, suggests that Chelmsford West should remain a safe Conservative seat.
