1997 could be the closest shave the Conservatives will have in this seat for the foreseeable future and Sir Michael Spicer should feel more comfortable after securing his lead in 2001.

However, the Liberal Democrats have a solid presence in the seat and did especially well in the 2003 local elections.

 If they can build on this, they could fancy their chances at overturning another seat in an area where they have made impressive gains in recent years.
