Constituency profile

Although the middle-class voters in this constituency have recently shifted their allegiance from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats, this seat may return to a status of a three-way marginal in the longer term.

Anti-Labour voting should ensure that the Liberal Democrats maintain their hold at a Scottish parliamentary level, but Anne Begg seems to have established a reasonably secure position in the last two general elections.

The challenge for the Liberal Democrats is to turn their outstanding performance in May 2003 into a credible challenge for the seat at the next general election.

Any Conservative revival in Scotland will surely start elsewhere but they may look at the southern Aberdeen division as a longer-term target.
