Carshalton and Wallington
Constituency profile
Having won the seat in 1997, Tom Brake increased his majority in 2001.
He seems to be conforming to a pattern of Liberal Democrat MPs who assiduously cultivate local support and thus hold on to unlikely gains.
However, the Liberal Democrats’ control of Sutton Council is increasingly involving the party in unpopular decisions, which may have an impact on their performance in general elections.
If this were to happen, the Conservatives would be in the best position to take advantage.
