Constituency profile

Any prospect of the Labour Party losing this seat in the near future dissipated when the unusual circumstances of the 2001 election still produced a 20 per cent majority for the Labour candidate, Mark Hendrick.

It was a seat where the Labour party had shown itself to be divided over the candidacy of Mr Hendrick, the turnout was exceptionally low, and the defending party was the party with a massive majority on the House of Commons.

If there were ever to be a protest vote, it would have happened there.

It did not, and it is very hard to see how and from where the Liberal Democrats or the Conservatives can mount an electoral challenge to Labour in Preston.

As an MP in his early 40s, it looks as if Mark Hendrick should hold this seat, provided he avoids serious rifts with his own constituency party.
