Constituency profile

Peterborough is certainly vulnerable to a Conservative recovery as Labour’s support wanes nationally.

More importantly, the considerable local disappointment with Labour and the private finance initiative over the plans for Peterborough jail are no doubt contributing to Labour’s current difficulties.

The Labour Group on the city council is badly divided and was unable to profit even when a Conservative councillor was jailed for benefit fraud and the Tory leader of the council was ousted from his post and suspended from the Conservative Party for racial abuse.

It is not certain that the Conservatives will regain the seat at the next election, but on current trends, they can be quietly confident of so doing.

The unknown factor will be the role of the Liberal Democrats.

In 2001 they took a substantial number of voters from Labour.

It remains to be seen if they will encourage tactical voting to keep the Conservatives at bay next time.
