Constituency profile

Although census information indicates relatively little demographic change, social attitudes and political loyalties have changed radically.

The 1980s witnessed Barking changing from Labour stronghold to Labour-Tory marginal, and although Labour has regained a good majority, the vote is volatile with swings to the Labour in 1997 and to the Conservatives in 2001 well above the national average.

A significant factor for the future will be the influx of residents to any new riverside housing developments.

This may create an increase in professional and managerial voters, although this in itself should not concern Labour unduly given its current support from this group.
