While many were surprised by Sinn Fein's victory in the 2001 general election few will be so when they hold the seat at the next general election.

Since 2001 Sinn Fein's fortunes continue to wax while those of the SDLP and UUP have waned somewhat. With a majority of 5,040 Pat Doherty would expect to hold this seat quite comfortably.
