Castle Point
Constituency profile
Castle Point has traditionally been safe Conservative territory but is no longer so.
It is too early to tell whether Christine Butler’s win in 1997 will go down in the history of Castle Point as an electoral aberration or a turning point in its political nature.
What is certain is that it is currently very marginal.
Although the local election results may have shown a swing to the Conservatives, this could equally remain a close-fought contest, and neither is another Labour victory inconceivable.
This seat is one to watch.
