Constituency profile

Reverend Martin Smyth, who was personally opposed to the Good Friday agreement, won the seat for the UUP in 2001 with the DUP deciding not to field a contest.

This time round, Smyth is not standing and the DUP has decided to contest the seat. With the unionist vote set to split, the SDLP may also be in with a chance.

The nationalists need the DUP to take around 6,000 votes from the UUP to hand them the seat. A bitter battle is being waged for the constituency, and the outcome remains in the balance.
