This is a constituency that cuts across the political spectrum, though comfortably held by Labour at present, it was held by the Conservatives for 9 years until 1992.

Although not quite a marginal seat, the Conservatives made some ground at the 2001 election and would need a swing of 12.65 per cent to take it back.
