Abandoned cars: Public can now report such problems in their communities

A local actionline aimed at cracking down on yobbish behaviour has been launched by Home Office minister Hazel Blears.

The "It's your call" phone line will be available in 25 areas around the country and the public will be able to use the service to report anti-social behaviour in their community.

The North East is the first place to see the introduction of the scheme, with other specifically appointed "Together" action areas, including Burnley, Oxford and Southend, being added over the next six weeks.

Posters, phone boxes and flyers will be used to promote the actionline number locally and people will be encouraged to report any problems in their neighbourhoods, from graffiti to abandoned cars.

Blears said: "We have made significant progress in tackling anti-social behaviour and reclaiming our communities for the law-abiding majority.

"But there is still more to do. We need the public to play their part too and take some responsibility for where they live.

"Engaging local people is vital to create strong communities and tackle the thugs who can destroy people's quality of life and ruin neighbourhoods."

Dame Sally Powell, chairwoman of the Local Government Association's safer communities board, said: "Local authorities are committed to addressing the concerns of local people and we are pleased to be part of this drive to tackle anti-social behaviour where it arises.

"We look forward to continuing to work with the Home Office in identifying any further support and powers that may be beneficial for communities and local government as they tackle the issues that are important locally."
