Conservative leader reaches out to Muslims
Michael Howard has praised the contribution of Muslims to British national life.
Speaking at the inaugural event of the Conservative Muslim Forum, the party leader sought to reach out to the UK's Islamic community.
He said that "the contribution which British Muslims have made to our national life is immense".
"British Muslims form an economically vibrant, culturally creative, socially aware community which enriches modern Britain," Howard added.
"And there are many natural ties, of friendship, common outlook and shared values that unite the Muslim community and the Conservative Party.
"I believe we share a commitment to the integrity of the family. A respect for the wisdom of tradition. An opposition to the drugs culture, social breakdown and crime.
"A belief in the importance of compassion, and the need to help the vulnerable. A commitment to enterprise, hard work and individual ambition. And a desire for peace across the globe."
Howard said the new forum would "give a formal institutional expression to our ties of friendship and shared values".
Election battle
The Conservative leader predicted that "in just 106 days we will face a general election".
He said the country "faces an important choice" between different sets of values.
Howard said his party would offer "hard-headed solutions based on the values we all share".
"And I say to everyone who believe the first duty of government is to protect the public: whatever the colour of your skin, whatever your religion, come and join us," he added.
"I want to see a Britain in which all our citizens are secure.
"That is why I want to see zero tolerance policing. And that means zero tolerance of racial hatred."
