Sir Ian Blair: New Met chief

The home secretary has announced that Sir Ian Blair will become the new Metropolitan Police commissioner next year.

Dubbed "Labour's favourite copper", Sir Ian was the favourite to succeed Sir John Stephens who will step down in January.

He is the first head of New Scotland Yard to be appointed since the creation of the Greater London Authority.

The selection process, which was chaired by Home Office mandarin John Gieve, was agreed by the home secretary with the Metropolitan Police Authority and the Mayor of London.

Commitment

Commenting on the appointment, David Blunkett said: "Sir Ian has a clear personal vision for the Metropolitan Police Service, and as Deputy Commissioner has demonstrated powerful leadership qualities at the strategic level.  

"He has been a key player in driving forward the police reform agenda, demonstrating a strong commitment to developing a modern service that enjoys widespread public support and trust.

"He is also an exceptional officer with strong personal conviction and a high level of integrity."
