The Conservatives have unveiled new transport policies aimed at "reversing the government's war on motorists".

Announcing a five point plan on Tuesday, Tory transport spokesman, Damian Green, said the government "has spent seven years waging a war on motorists".
 
"A Conservative government would reverse that with a range of practical policy changes," he said.

"We recognise that for tens of millions of people driving a car is a necessity, and should not be made a misery by government policy. We will be the intelligent friend of the safe and sensible driver."

Conservative proposals include restricting the role of traffic wardens, ensuring local councils consult emergency services over inserting new road humps and allowing car sharers to use bus lanes.

The party will also introduce a code of conduct for wheel clampers and increasing intelligent road safety systems.
