Morgan under fire for delivery record
Rhodri Morgan

Rhodri Morgan has been accused of "running scared" over his record on public services in Wales.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats made the claim on Tuesday after it was announced that a debate in the Cardiff assembly on Rhodri Morgan's annual report had been cancelled.

And the Welsh Conservatives also warned that Morgan's administration was delivering "failing public services, more bureaucracy and higher taxes".

However, the Labour-led administration has been highlighting the extra funding made available as a result of the latest government spending review.

"It has been a very tough spending round, but we have got a very good settlement," Morgan said.

"But as the money available in the 2004/08 period is not as good as it was in previous settlements, we have got to make sure we get every best penny out of it in terms of spending on the front line."

However, opposition parties in Wales have raised questions about whether the devolved administration is capable of delivering on its commitments.

"This Labour Assembly Government is not delivering for Wales," said Mike German, Lib Dem leader in the assembly.

"Rhodri Morgan has consistently failed to point to any real achievements by his government. This debate was to be the opportunity for him to present his case and have it scrutinised by the other parties.

"Now, we won't have a scheduled chance to hold him to account on a year of Labour running the assembly alone.

"Perhaps these 'annual' debates are now to be held at longer intervals; that might give the first minister a chance to actually report on having achieved something."

Meanwhile, the Conservatives marked the final week of assembly term by attacking Labour's record since coming to power.

"The people of Wales should be under no illusion what they get from a Labour government – failing public services, more bureaucracy and higher taxes," said assembly group leader Nick Bourne.

"What Labour has delivered is longer hospital waiting lists, higher council tax bills, financial uncertainty for students, schools and universities, extra bureaucracy, and more government waste.

"It is no wonder the people of Wales are questioning the relevance of our National Assembly when they have reaped so few benefits from the Labour government which runs it."
