Muslims have been urged to use their vote in next week's local, European and mayoral elections in order to halt the BNP.

In an open letter the secretary general of the Muslim Council emphasises the "crucial importance" of taking part in the election next Thursday.

The appeal comes amid fears that mainstream parties could lose out to UKIP and the BNP under the system of proportional representation used to elect MEPs.

"All Muslim electors, men and women, young and old, should utilise their votes," writes Iqbal Sacranie.

"The rise of the far right parties poses a dangerous threat to our communities."

He goes on to warn that the BNP could gain a voice in the European parliament unless the Muslim vote is mobilised.

The far-right party needs just five per cent of the vote to gain a Brussels foothold.

"If this happens, may God forbid, the BNP would have access to much more than just television and radio," adds Sacranie.

"By right, they would be given funding with which to promote their racist agenda in Britain."

Despite the appeal the senior figure does not advise Muslims how they should cast their vote next week.

"Irrespective of whom they vote for, their participation will help reduce the percentage of votes cast for the BNP, making it more difficult for them to succeed with their divisive and menacing plans," suggests Sacranie.

"It is not the role of the MCB to recommend a particular political party you should vote for.

"However, it is our duty to keep the community informed and aware about the dangers that threaten it from staying away from the polls and not participating."

It is thought, however, that Labour could lose out significantly as a result of the war in Iraq.

The Liberal Democrats believe they are in a strong position to secure the vote of the Muslim community as a result of their opposition to the conflict.
