UUP sets out anti-constitution EU platform
The Ulster Unionists have launched their European election campaign vowing to keep the pound and oppose any EU constitution.
Setting out details of his manifesto on Monday, UUP candidate Jim Nicholson said he would oppose any moves to create a federal Europe.
Describing his position as "euro-realist", Nicholson sought to emphasise the reputation built up through his work as an MEP since 1989.
And highlighting his ties in both Brussels and Washington, he urged the electorate to give him their first vote.
"Jim Nicholson’s influence in Europe has been recognised with his appointment as chairman of the European parliament's delegation to the USA," said the manifesto.
"This gives him remarkable opportunities to put forward Ulster’s case in Washington."
It added: "Jim Nicholson has consistently opposed the new federal European constitution and is in favour of us retaining our currency.
"But his enthusiasm for Northern Ireland and his commitment to getting the best possible deal for our province is second to none."
And describing himself as a "mainstream" unionist, Nicholson said he was dedicated to "keeping unionism at the political centre".
