Hain seeks consensus on Commons hours

Peter Hain has indicated that he remains open to further changes in the Commons sitting hours.

Speaking during business questions, the leader of the house said the modernisation committee would "reflect" on the views of MPs.

A survey of MPs for the procedures committee had found a small majority in favour of reverting to the old 10.00pm finishing time on Tuesday.

Janet Anderson, Labour MP for Rossendale and Darwen, said there was "concern on all sides of this house" about the revised sitting hours.

Responding to her call for an early debate on the issue, Hain said the modernisation committee was about to begin a review of ways to resolve the matter.

"I have wanted to achieve an agreement so that the house can move forward instead of being split as we were when the original decision was taken, and split as the procedure committee report showed," he said.

"If we can find a consensus through the modernisation committee review I will put a vote to the house as soon as it is possible to do so."

Conservative MP Dr Julian Lewis also expressed concern, saying that MPs should be "allowed to vote on their own sitting hours".

Hain responded that the modernisation committee would "reflect" on the views of MPs before bringing forward its proposals.
