Nominations close for EU poll in Ulster

As nominations close for Ulster candidates wishing to stand in next month's European parliamentary elections, the shape of the contest is becoming clearer.

It is believed that seven people have put their names forward and paid the £5,000 deposit, which has caused some controversy as it is not being implemented in other European regions.

Democratic Unionist Party leader the Rev Ian Paisley is standing down after 25 years as an MEP, with barrister Jim Allister standing for election in his place.

Ulster Unionist Jim Nicholson is seeking re-election, while Sinn Fein former health minister Baibre de Brun is standing in the June 10 poll for the first time.

Belfast Lord Mayor Martin Morgan represents the SDLP, replacing former leader John Hume.

Other contenders include broadcaster Eamonn McCann for the Socialist Environmental Alliance, Lindsay Whitcroft for the Green Party and John Gilliland, who is standing as an independent candidate.
