Norris puts crime top of his manifesto
Steve Norris has made crime his manifesto priority for his campaign to be London mayor.
Norris makes a personal commitment to make London safer, and proposes policies geared towards curbing anti-social behaviour.
He says he plans to introduce New York-style meetings with individual borough commanders to ensure that police officers focus on streets blighted by crime.
Norris has also declared his intention to spend the mayor's £20 million publicity budget on 250 youth and sports centres to distract teenagers from law breaking.
He has also conceived of a capital-wide blitz on graffiti involving councils, businesses and community groups, and has vowed to use the mayor's planning powers to "design out crime and vandalism on housing estates".
In an introduction to the two-page document, Mr Norris says: "I live here with my family in Lambeth so I have my own stake in the city's success.
"As mayor, I am determined to make this a safer, healthier city for every Londoner."
Norris goes on to pledge a zero tolerance policy towards those who break the law.
"We know that something can be done about crime. In New York, Rudy Giuliani showed how you can make a great city a safer place in which to live and work.''
