Norris pledges action on crime against women

Steve Norris has set out his strategy to make women feel safer in London.

The Conservative mayoral contender said he was "determined to take action" on the issue.

The policies are contained in a report by his Women’s Crime Taskforce, which was published on Monday.

Proposals include introducing security guards on the Tubes after 10.00pm, and installing brighter lighting and panic buttons around station entrances.

Norris highlighted figures showing that since 2000 rapes have increased by a quarter and sexual assaults are up by 13 per cent.

"Of course, crime affects every person in the capital regardless of sex, race or background," said Norris.

"But there are particular types of crime that affect women and I am determined to take action to tackle these crimes.

"No woman should feel afraid to walk home from the tube or worry for their safety whilst jogging early in the morning."

The taskforce was advised by Professor Gloria Laycock from the Jill Dando Institute and Ann Elledge from the Suzy Lamplugh Trust.

Other recommendations include high profile awareness campaign to demonstrate how women can protect themselves and zero tolerance for mini-cab touts.
