Blair to stage second immigration summit
Tony Blair will hold a second immigration summit at Downing Street tomorrow.
It is part of the prime minister's continuing effort to root out abuse in the system.
The first summit was held earlier this month, having been called in response to accusations that some immigration applications were waived through the Home Office's Sheffield office without proper checks.
Critics contended at the height of the furore that the immigration service was in meltdown. The controversy led to the resignation of immigration minister Beverley Hughes.
Accusations were levelled by civil servant Steve Moxon, an employee at the Immigration and Nationality Directorate in Sheffield, and another whistleblower at the British embassy in Romania, James Cameron.
Moxon alleged that there was a deliberate policy within the IND to reduce the applications backlog by rubber-stamping applications from EU accession countries.
And British Consul James Cameron claimed that his embassy had turned a blind eye to visa "scams" operating in the country.
Despite media and opposition criticism, however, the government seem to have weathered the storm.
And Blunkett achieved a notable success last week in managing to extend Britain's borders to the Eurostar terminal in Brussels.
