LOCAL MP CALLS FOR THE INCLUSION OF CARERS ON 2011 CENSUS

Tony Baldry says accurate data is needed to meet carers’ needs

North Oxfordshire MP, Tony Baldry, is supporting a parliamentary motion campaigning for a question on carers to be included in the next census in 2011.

The motion is calling on the Government to ensure that local authorities and health bodies have sufficient data so that effective policy decisions and plans for services to meet carers’ needs can be made.

The last census, which was carried out in 2001, found that there were 6 million people working as unpaid carers in the UK, forcing local government to drastically increase the amount of formal care available.

The inclusion of a question on carers in the 2011 census would be hugely welcomed by Oxfordshire’s carers and would ensure that local authorities recognise the 2000 carers in the region and the invaluable services which they provide.

Mr Baldry has also started a campaign and petition to keep the Carers Support Grant and maintain funding for carers in North Oxfordshire.

Tony Baldry MP said:

“As the 2001 Census showed, provision for carers in our region was drastically underestimated.  Through including a question on carers in the 2011 census the Government will realise the scale of Oxfordshire’s carers’ needs.

“With 2000 carers working around the clock in Oxfordshire, I want to make sure they get all the help and support they require.  The fantastic support they provide should be recognised and assisted as much as possible.”
