Girvan on the Up
It was great to see the positive publicity Girvan had in the Herald newspaper as one of the most desirable places to live in Scotland based on rising house prices. This is a sign of increasing prosperity and is also a tribute to the hard work happening locally to regenerate the area. My only worry about it is that local people could be priced out of the market but I am informed that many of the house buyers are local people who want to stay in the area - and who can blame them.
I also had a meeting last week with Bob Leitch, Chief Executive of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce who told me that there has been a tremendous rise in the number of companies exporting from the Girvan area, especially among smaller companies and of course the whisky industry. Grants, the local Girvan Distillery will also be helped by new EU rules which protect the traditional way of making Scotch Whisky making it easier to protect Scotch from unfair practices, supporting export success and the jobs that depend on that continuing success.
