Why don't you try shopping on your bike? Buy yourself a couple of panniers, and it might only take three trips to the supermarket to bring home the weekly family food. And why don't you take the children to school on the bus instead of driving them yourself? Just get up half an hour earlier, and get out there to the bus stop in good time. Whilst you are about it, why don't you get the train to work – surely you could find a bus to take you the station? You can always buy a brolley for the wet days, and a rainproof for the windy ones.
The government and their “Liberal” friends in many Councils around the country think you and I are anti-social, because we find our car is more convenient to do the shopping, or to get to work. Apparently when we use the car we are wrecking the planet, yet when we turn on the central heating, drive past empty office buildings at night with all lights blazing, watch the Council fireworks or use the cooker and fridge that is not so damaging. As yet the Green police do not turn up on your doorstep to ask you to turn the appliances off, but they are there all the time when you are trying to drive, making your trip a misery.
It's all because they do not like the freedom the car brings people. They want us all to travel by socialised transport. My car waits patiently in my garage until I am ready to go. It is never late for me but I can be as late as I like for it. When I go by train I must never be late at the station, yet the train can be as late as it likes for me, and often is. When I go to London to my office from my constituency I often have to take a brief case full of papers, fresh clothes for the week, food and drink for my London house. It is almost a boot full. If I go by train I cannot get all of it to the station when walking, and once on the train I get some funny looks as I try to put the items on the narrow luggage rack..
I am all for cleaning up the planet. More insulation in houses and offices, lights that go off when people leave the room, heating control systems that stop heating unused areas, more fuel efficient cars, cleaner ways of generating power in the first place –these are the ways to be green and to reinforce people's freedom to choose. The folly of modern political correctness is that the very policies they are putting in place to deter us from using cars are themselves the cause of so much more pollution.
Every lane removed from general use, every chicane, bollard and new traffic light is another contribution to the national traffic jam. Thousands more cars churn out so much more exhaust as they sit impatiently in long queues awaiting the pleasure of the road designers. Indeed, in some towns and cities now the policy is so advanced I wonder why the planners do not simply place bollards in front of everyone's drive, to save us the trouble of getting out onto the road in the first place.
Trains and buses are good at moving lots of people along main routes at busy times of day – as long as we are allowed to drive to the stations and bus stops and park there relatively easily. All who love freedom should rise up and say “Yes we are motorists, and there's nothing wrong with that”. I find young people are particularly keen for us to be greener, but they all want to own and drive cars themselves. We can do both if we stop pillorying the car driver.
