Pensioners urged to claim Winter Fuel Payments

Joe Benton MP, today urged pensioners to claim their Winter Fuel Payments before the deadline of 31 March 2003.

Joe Benton MP said: “This Labour Government introduced the Winter Fuel Payments to ensure pensioners receive financial help to heat their homes during the winter months.

“I would urge all people over 60 in my constituency of Bootle and all over the country who have not received a WFP but believe they are eligible to make sure they claim what they are entitled to. Households are eligible to claim £200 and this winter and many pensioners in Bootle could benefit from the payments – but claims have to be made before 31 March 2003.

“Labour is determined to help pensioners and relieve the financial burden which many experience when faced with extra heating bills during cold snaps.

“By contrast the Tories would take away these benefits because they are ideologically opposed to investing in public services.

“Iain Duncan Smith showed his true intentions when he referred to subject of Winter Fuel Payments as ‘a cock-eyed way to increase pensioner income' (House of Commons Hansard Debates 15/03/99).

“Labour is committed to lifting pensioners out of poverty because we believe in social justice and fairness for all.”
