Islington under Labour is a better place

Tuesday 22nd November 2005

Emily Thornberry, Labour MP for Islington South and Finsbury used a visit to City University to highlight the achievements of the Labour Government, her campaign against poverty, and the need to continue positive developments on Islington’s council estates.

“Under the Conservatives council estates were left to rot, under the Labour Government substantially more money has been put into estates,” said Mrs Thornberry, “The Labour Government is the only one that stands up for working people.”

While admitting the situation was far from ideal on council estates, she called on the Liberal Democrat-controlled Islington Council to continue the progress that has been made under the Labour Government.

“We have sex workers and drug dealers invading estates along the Caledonian Road. They are moving into these estates where people are powerless, where they don’t know what action to take. Why should a child have to walk down hallways littered with needles and step over pimps sleeping at their doorway?” said Mrs. Thornberry, “The Liberal Democrat council don’t want to use ASBOs because they say they infringe civil liberties. I say rubbish. I don’t see why we should stop using hard measures when they have helped the situation. The extent of my liberalism is whether I would let a prostitute work in my back garden, would you? No.”
