Investing in further education

Brighton Pavilion Labour and Co-operative MP David Lepper told the Brighton Varndean College Politics Society on Tuesday (4 October) that investment in further education was something the Labour government could be proud of.

Following lobbying by David four years ago, the funding rules had changed for colleges which want to invest in new buildings.
 
David said,

"Earlier today I was at the City College with further education minister Bill Rammell MP for the opening of its Construction Skills Craft Centre - part of a £2.8m investment by the college in training young people in vital building trades.
 
"On the Varndean campus there is the new Downsview Link College which gives many youngsters with disabilities a much better chance of further education while BHASVIC is also planning new buildings.
 
"All this means more young people will have greater opportunities to continue their education and training after the age of 16."
 
David also discussed issues raised by the Varndean students including the national minimum wage, building in Brighton and Hove, funding in the NHS and reform of the House of Lords.
 
David commented,

"I always enjoy these sessions with Varndean students who consistently show the wide range of interests young people have in what is happening, locally, nationally and internationally."
