MP Crausby wants better local buses

More local control of buses is needed to ensure better services, according to Bolton North East MP David Crausby.
Speaking in a House of Commons debate on Tuesday with the Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander, he pressed the Minister to reveal plans to hold bus operators and local authorities to account for the performance of local bus services.
The Minister announced that the Government plans to introduce a new performance regime to improve the reliability and punctuality of bus services. The proposals will require both operators and local authorities to account for the performance of local bus services, and will include strengthened penalties where performance fails to improve.
Mr. Crausby said:
“I welcome the increased powers, which will enable a better service for passengers following what was a disastrous privatisation.
“I’m delighted that the Government has recognised the crucial role of the bus sector. They are a lifeline for our local communities.  They are also a key part of the strategy to tackle rising congestion and to meet our environmental goals.
“It is vital, however, that operators and local authorities also perform effectively in the delivery of free national bus travel for pensioners.
“I will be closely monitoring the arrangements made between operators and local authorities to ensure it is successful.”
