SURREY’S MPS UNITE TO OPPOSE BROWN’S NHS CUTS

Surrey’s MPs have formed an action group to co-ordinate a cross-county campaign against Government proposals which endanger our Accident and Emergency Services. All the county’s MPs met Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley in Westminster this week to plan steps to fight any withdrawal of acute services from Surrey Hospitals.

Conservative leader David Cameron visited Surrey last week to see for himself the superb work NHS professionals are doing – work threatened by the Treasury-driven agenda of cuts to accident and emergency provision. Leaked documents from the PCT confirm that the need to save money is driving the planned re-organisation and all Surrey’s MPs are united in opposing cuts to St Peter’s, the Royal Surrey, Epsom, East Surrey or Frimley Park’s A and E services.

A delegation representing all Surrey’s MPs has handed in an 8,000 signature petition to Patricia Hewitt, signed by residents who are currently served by Frimley Park and St Peter’s, protesting against any closures. The petition was co-ordinated with representatives of the campaign to save the Royal Surrey.

Speaking after the meeting, Crispin Blunt MP said

“David Cameron and Andrew Lansley have made opposition to NHS cuts in Surrey a key priority.  The Government’s unfair healthcare funding formula means that we in Surrey get less money per person than other parts of the Country.  It would be a disaster if any of our existing hospitals were to suffer any reduction in services and the knock-on effect on neighbouring hospitals would be very significant and place an intolerable strain on their already limited resources.  Surrey MPs will continue to work together and fight any NHS cuts in the County.”
