Commissioner for Older People (Wales) Act 2006

This Bill was not mentioned in the Queen’s speech, but appeared in the background notes.

Under this Bill, a new commissioner will be appointed to represent the interests of older people in Wales.

This will be the first time such an appointment has been made. The commissioner will promote and raise awareness of the views of older people.

The Bill will encourage the good treatment of older people and reduce discrimination. The commissioner will be able to take on the cases of individuals and take court action if necessary.

Other powers include the commissioning of research, conducting investigations and making representations to any individual or body regarding devolved matters concerning the interests of older people.
