Armed Forces Act 2006

With this Bill, the government aims to replace all three Service Discipline Acts with a single modern service law system.

The Bill will bring in a unified court martial system, and establish a joint service prosecuting authority.

A modernised grievance procedure will be included in the Bill, as will a modernised system of service statutory inquiries, along with provisions to continue the application of service law to civilians accompanying the armed forces overseas.

The Bill is expected to contain three hundred and fifty clauses, and its introduction is currently planned by the end of November 2005.

In order to maintain the legal basis for service basis and other aspects of the Bill, the primary legislation needs to be approved by both Houses of parliament by December 31 2006.

The House of Commons published a research paper on the Bill prior to its publication.
