Boris Johnson - Shadow higher education minister
Question: Does the Unite/MORI research show that the new top-up fee regime is having less impact than people thought?
Boris Johnson: It is good news that students are adapting to the new regime, and it is good that students are continuing to pile into higher education.
There is no sign of students being deterred by the new top-up fees regime.
Student debt appears to be levelling off for the first time.
If it helps students to value higher education and to want to get a university degree, and if the new fee regime makes them think more carefully about there courses and choose them with thought, then it is all to the good.
Question: Do you believe top-up fees make students value their courses more and choose more carefully?
Boris Johnson: The results appear to show a good news story. If I think back to my own university days I am full of admiration for the way modern students are adapting.
We were heavily subsidised by the government, we are now in a new era when many more people are in higher education and the finances have got to change.
It's good to see that British students are adapting to that change.
Question: How can students and the wider community be brought closer together, and can students have a positive impact on their communities?
Boris Johnson: It is clearly a good thing if student become involved in their communities and there isn't a 'town and gown' split.
On the other hand students are at university to learn and they aren't integrated into the community in the same way everybody else is.
There is no doubt about more and more students are taking jobs, earning money and getting involved in the community in a way 20 to 30 years ago we just wouldn't have seen.
