Press Release
Breaking New Ground, or Breaking the Law?
18 October 2005
Do you use scanned or downloaded images from the Internet for your documents or presentations? Did you know that if you use these you are almost certainly infringing someone else's intellectual property rights, even if it is for internal use? In other words, you are breaking the law.
As part of The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s current Agenda, Marketing and the Law, the Birmingham and Coventry business community will have the opportunity to receive valuable legal advice at a presentation entitled, ‘Marketing and the Law – Are You Breaking New Ground or Breaking the Law?’ The event takes place on Tuesday, 25th October, from 6.30pm at Wragge & Co LLP, Colmore Row, Birmingham and has been organised by the Birmingham and Coventry branch of The Chartered Institute of Marketing but is open to all. (For further event information and booking tel. Rae Coton 08707 770825, email admin@cimwestmidlands.co.uk or to book securely online visit www.cimmidlands.co.uk (registration necessary)).
Every six months The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) presents a new Agenda addressing a major topic for marketers today. The Agenda sets out the issues, analyses the drivers, implications and solutions, before taking you through the steps to using this knowledge in your work.
The presentation by David Thorp, Marketing Innovation Manager at The Chartered Institute of Marketing, will introduce the Agendas project, discuss The Chartered Institute of Marketing Professional Standards and CIM’s work with the Government on setting their marketing standards, soon to be launched.
David will be joined by Rafi Azim-Khan, Head of e-business and Marketing, Wragge & Co solicitors, who will talk about the importance of working within the law, particularly looking at the increase in EU legislation and what it means to the practitioner.
Stephen Fleming, Chairman of the Birmingham and Coventry Branch of The Chartered Institute of Marketing said, “Professional marketers should all know how the law is affecting their business, because ignorance of the law is no defence to any breach of the law. Over the last five years there have been in excess of 500 pieces of legislation aimed at marketing and new codes of practice have also been introduced with numerous sets of guidance notes to accompany them. So it’s not surprising to ask if the future of marketing will be shaped more by legislators than marketers? This event aims to address some of the concerns of marketers and tell you all you need to know about marketing and the law, both at a strategic and operational level, now and in the future.”
