Ruth Kelly and 14-19 Reform
Steve Sinnott, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said:
“I welcome Ruth Kelly’s new thinking on 14-19 exams. She has now the opportunity to bring forward her promised 2008 review of 14-19 exam reform and re-energise the enthusiasm which Tomlinson triggered.
“Rejecting the Tomlinson report was a decision made in haste. The country does not have the option of repenting at leisure. One month after the Election she now has the opportunity to drop the divisive proposals for academic and vocational diplomas.
“A single national diploma which encourages maximum opportunity for students is the best way of improving England’s staying on rate.
“Not adopting this route will encourage those who want to develop a two tier qualification system.”
