Press Release
New Year brings new Director of Public Policy at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations
03 JANUARY 2007
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has appointed Liz Atkins, former Director of Strategy and Communications at the National Housing Federation, as its new Director of Public Policy. Atkins will lead the organisation’s 45-strong Public Policy Department, covering campaigns, campaigning effectiveness, media, policy, research and partnerships work. Her role will be to maximise recognition of the importance of the voluntary sector, and in sustaining a favourable policy environment, build upon current opportunities for the sector to flourish.
Liz Atkins said:
‘I'm delighted to be joining NCVO at such an exciting time for the voluntary and community sector. The sector makes an enormous difference to the lives of society's most marginalised individuals and communities and government is increasingly keen to harness its added value.
‘I'm looking forward to ensuring that the voice of the people the sector works with is taken properly into account in the design and delivery of services and securing a more equal and effective partnership with government.'
Before joining the National Housing Federation, Atkins was Head of Policy and Public Affairs at NSPCC where she mobilised 140,000 supporters to back the charity’s campaigns. She has also held campaigning and policy positions at the Post Office, the Co-operative Union and the Labour Party.
Liz Atkins joins NCVO following the departure of Campbell Robb, former Director of Public Policy, who left NCVO to become Director General of the Office of the Third Sector. She will begin her position on 15 January 2007.
