May 2004 Autism Awareness Week
A major national campaign run by the National Autistic Society, this year it focuses on 'Planning for Life' and considers the experiences of people with autism, and their families, and the various issues and needs that they face at different life stages. The 2004 AAW report, A Place in Society, pulls together evidence on current outcomes for people with autism, using real life experiences to illustrate the particular difficulties in planning for life experienced by people with autism. While a statutory framework exists in all the UK nations for transition planning after compulsory education, its implementation is at best patchy.
