Last Ditch Talks Tonight To Avert T5 Strike Action

14 December 2005

Heathrow Terminal 5 Picket Lines on Strike Action Days in Bonus Dispute

There will be talks this evening at Gatwick Airport between the Senior Officials of the three unions involved  in the T5 dispute and Bernard Dempsey, Vice Chair of Laing O’Rourke at 7.45 p.m.to see if a solution can be found to the bonus dispute giving rise to strike action this Friday 16th December.

Meanwhile GMB and other trade union members employed at Heathrow Terminal 5 construction site by civil engineering employer Laing O’Rourke  announced that  picket lines will be placed at the following places around Heathrow on the first two days of action from

5.30am to 10 am then 2 pm to 4.30 pm

Friday 16th December and Monday 19th December 2005 at

  1. Plot 9 Caravan Park, Old Bath Road. (main photo opportunity)
  2. The Longford Roundabout
  3. Beacon Roundabout
  4. Southern Roundabout
  5. Nene Road Roundabout
  6. Hatton Cross Tube Station

The Laing O’Rouke employees are seeking an additional £1 per hour on their bonus scheme which has not been reviewed in 3 years and is lagging behind other workers on site. This would increase their earnings, including the travel element; by roughly 5% per day. The last offer of an addition 22 pence per hour was rejected earlier this month.

Tom Kelly, GMB Construction Organiser said. “These are last ditch talks as plans are advanced for the strike action.

BAA will not allow the picket lines to set up on their land. GMB do not see this as a problem as the solidarity amongst these construction workers over the bonus issues will ensure that the strike action is effecting in advancing the dispute. We expect that trade unionists on the site will not cross these pickets’ lines.”
