English Partnerships launches search for developer for Heart of East Greenwich project
15 February 2006
Developers are being sought to work with national regeneration agency English Partnerships on the redevelopment of the former Greenwich District Hospital. The agency and Greenwich Council have been working with architects Rick Mather Associates since last autumn to develop design guidelines for the 3 ha site that will form the focus of the Heart of East Greenwich regeneration area.
Philip Dibsdale, Senior Regeneration Manager for English Partnerships said, “This is a unique opportunity to deliver a truly mixed-use scheme with high-quality public services on a site that has always been central to the lives of the local community. To create this pivotal scheme, we are looking for a development partner who shares our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”
Leader of Greenwich Council, Councillor Chris Roberts said, “At the heart of the scheme is the provision of high quality public leisure, health, learning and community facilities on the former hospital site, all within easy access of existing and new communities. This will be a great opportunity to improve the quality of public services in East Greenwich.”
The addition of private and affordable homes, shops and offices as part of the development will also help inject new life into the area. The development is expected to become an exemplar 21st century mixed-use scheme that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable as well as providing a new landmark for East Greenwich.
English Partnerships has launched a European-wide search for a preferred development partner who, it is hoped, will be in place by the end of 2006.
The hospital closed when medical services were transferred to a new facility in 2001. English Partnerships acquired the site from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust in November 2004 as part of its remit to make best use of surplus public sector land.
