24 January 2006
New venue will have 4th largest capacity in UK and substantial community benefits
Milton Keynes Partnership today announced that Gaming International Ltd and ClearChannel Entertainment have been selected as preferred developer for the re-development and management of the National Bowl, Milton Keynes.
The successful bid includes:
- Increasing the capacity of the Arena from 65,000 to 75,000;
- A new arch stage for the Arena;
- A new Bowl Pavilion suitable for staging indoor events all year round for up to 2000 people;
- A permanent skateboarding park, built to international specifications with the aim of using this as a skateboarding display arena in association with the 2012 Olympics;
- A new Milton Keynes Greyhound Stadium. The stadium would have a maximum total capacity of 3,500 with restaurant and bars;
- Significant improvements to the Route 51 cycle route and wildlife corridor, which passes through the site. Also the addition of a children’s playground and amenities, such as cafes and permanent toilets;
- A 4/5 star 120 bedroom hotel with leisure complex; and
- A small sports pavilion (“The Gatehouse”) to house local organisations such as the MK Cycling Club.
Sir Bob Reid, Chairman of Milton Keynes Partnership Committee said:
“This is an exciting strategy that will reinvigorate the National Bowl, attract events of national significance, provide year round opportunities for local events and daily access for MK communities.
“Competition was tough – we had two very high quality bids to consider. On balance we feel this is the right decision and mix of facilities for Milton Keynes.”
Selection involved a formal assessment process involving both Milton Keynes Partnership and Milton Keynes Council. The process was managed in accordance with strict tendering procedures laid down by central government.
It will be for Gaming International Ltd / ClearChannel Entertainment to seek planning approval from Milton Keynes Council for their proposals. The public will be able to comment on the proposals as part of the planning process.
