Who are we?

English Heritage

English Heritage is governed by a Chairman, Sir Neil Cossons, and up to 16 Commissioners. Commissioners are appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Appointments are made on the basis of knowledge or experience in fields such as history, archaeology, architecture, conservation techniques, planning, tourism, commerce and finance. Commissioners usually serve for three years, but their appointment may be renewed at the end of that period. The Chairman is also appointed by the Secretary of State, for a five-year term of office. The Chairman is paid a salary, and the Commissioners receive an allowance.

Commissioners meet every six weeks (except in August) to discuss major business and policy issues. In addition, they serve on at least one Advisory Committee or Panel which consider specific aspects of our work, such as archaeology, historic buildings and churches and cathedrals. There are also committees which look after finance and audit matters on behalf of the Commission.
