About the Director

ALAN WELLS OBE
I was born and grew up in East London. I was not a great success at school and left school at age 16 with few qualifications. I had a variety of unskilled jobs and began studying in the evening to get enough qualifications to train as a teacher.
After qualifying as a teacher, I taught in Secondary and Special schools in London. In 1973 I became the first full time adult literacy organiser in the UK in Birmingham. I was one of the members of the small influential national campaigning group for Government action on adult literacy in the mid-1970s.
I've been Director of the Basic Skills Agency since 1978. The Agency has developed many of the key initiatives in raising standards of literacy and numeracy in England and Wales. The Basic Skills Agency pioneered Family Literacy programmes in the UK and is responsible for the National Basic Skills Strategy in Wales. I was awarded the OBE in 1994.
My interests outside of work are learning rock guitar, film and theatre, reading and travel. I'm also fortunate to have been born an Arsenal supporter, the World's greatest football team.
