Ministers will have to take a decision within five years on whether to build new nuclear power stations if Britain is to reach its targets for cutting greenhouse gases, the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, has said.

A spokesman for the IEE said: "The IEE welcomes the renewed interest in nuclear power as a means of producing a lower carbon fuel economy. Given the increasing uncertainty in global gas and oil prices and the intermittent nature of wind, the IEE is convinced that the nuclear option must have a contribution to make to future price stability and security of supply.
